OA at Camp

The Order of the Arrow is Scouting’s National Honor Society, and the Brotherhood of Scout Honor Campers.  As such, it is engrained into camping, and its conception actually happened at a Scout Camp, over 90 years ago.  Summer Camp season 2006 will see much of the same programs at Gorsuch, including Morning Crew.  However, since the OA is a brotherhood of campers, the members of the Lodge Executive Committee have decided to increase its influence and assistance at the camp.  Therefore, we are adding several new programs in 2006.  The first key change is Wednesday will be designated Order of the Arrow Day.  The morning will start with hot beverages being served to tired adults, jump-starting their day.  After breakfast, the OA will run the flag ceremony.  All who are Arrowmen are encouraged to participate, with a full class “A” uniform, OA sash, and a cheerful smile.  Scouts will then go about their routines until after lunch.  There will be a service project in the afternoon, in which Arrowmen are encouraged to attend with work gloves, proper clothing and their sash.  Yes, it is alright for a little dirt to get on the new sash.  The day will conclude with a fellowship for all brothers in Dan’s Palace.  There also will exist an opportunity to seal your membership within the Order, in a Brotherhood Ceremony.
In addition to the above mentioned programs, there will also be an opportunity to hold elections at camp, with a call-out ceremony during the closing campfire.  If you already held your elections, don’t fret, and thank you.  We are just giving everyone another chance to become an Arrowmen.

OA in Your Troop

Just because you attend your troop meetings only, doesn't mean you can't be an active member in the Order.  National has created a program called the OA Troop/ Team Representative Program, and is available to all Arrowmen under the age of 18.  And yes, it does count towards rank advancement, like Star, Life and our loftiest goal of Eagle.  There is a cool patch you get to wear and you simply educate your troop about the Order.  As a member of Scouting's National Honor Society, the Brotherhood of Scout Honor Campers, you are expected to promote Camping and participation wherever you go.  Also, please remember your first responsibility as an Arrowmen is your troop, and then your chapter, and finally Lodge.  At the bare minimum, attend all the troop meetings you can.  Nanuk has a form for you and your scoutmaster to review and complete, a contract of sorts, ensuring the successful completion of your leadership position.  For more information, follow the link below.  Thank you.

OA in the Chapter and Lodge

Each chapter in Nanuk Lodge usually holds a monthly chapter meeting, the times and locations of each can be found on your chapter page (Link on the left).  Some chapters have business meetings discussing elections, service projects and fundraising, but occasionally they also address the fellowship aspect of the Order, and go bowling, or have a holiday party, either in the form of a potluck dinner or at a restaurant.  Bear Paw Chapter also runs their districts Spring Camporee, and has a blast doing it.  The OA also usually has a booth at Scout-o-Rama, and assists at the Council Winter Fun Days.
